Understanding the Mitel Bankruptcy and Your Support Options

On March 10, 2025, Mitel Networks Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Southern District of Texas. While Mitel frames this restructuring as a strategic step to “optimize our capital structure” and position the business for future growth, the filing is causing uncertainty for customers — especially those using the now end-of-life MiVoice Connect (formerly ShoreTel) systems.

While it is human nature for an announcement like this to cause anxiety, this is also the state of IT for the last decade or more, with consistent change and disruption. Amplix has helped navigate clients through similar times and is ready for this challenge as well, having prepared clients for the last two years with options and alternatives since the MiVoice Connect end of life announcement.

For businesses relying on Mitel for their Unified Communications or Contact Center infrastructure, this is a critical moment to assess future readiness and technological resilience. While Mitel asserts it will continue to support customers and fulfill vendor obligations, its ability to innovate and compete in a rapidly evolving communications landscape remains a key concern.

What Led to Mitel’s Bankruptcy?

According to court filings and a Reuters report, Mitel entered bankruptcy with $1.3 billion in debt, a burden stemming in part from a 2018 leveraged buyout by Searchlight Capital. The pandemic-era pivot to hybrid and remote work caught Mitel off guard, as the company’s legacy focus on in-office voice and messaging systems struggled to keep pace with cloud-first competitors. Even with its 2023 acquisition of Unify Inc., Mitel has lagged behind market leaders in video collaboration, AI-enhanced contact centers, and modern UCaaS/CCaaS functionality.

The restructuring aims to eliminate $1.15 billion in debt and reduce annual interest expenses by $135 million. Mitel has secured lender support for a “prepackaged” bankruptcy, which should allow for expedited proceedings with minimal operational disruption. But for customers on aging Mitel platforms, particularly MiVoice Connect, waiting out this transition may not be the best strategic move.

The End of Life for MiVoice Connect

Mitel is in the middle of an official End of Life (EOL) process for its MiVoice Connect platform. While some updates and support may persist for a limited time, the product is effectively being sunset, which means no new features, diminishing support resources, and increasing security risks over time.

We’ve already helped hundreds of clients navigate this transition. Our expertise lies in guiding organizations toward platforms that are secure, scalable, and optimized for hybrid work environments.

Amplix Remains Well Prepared To Continue Servicing Mitel Systems

Amplix has been a leader in supporting Mitel systems in volatile times in the past and is committed to having no interruption in the level of support our clients have grown accustomed to. As our EVP of Account Management, Mike Dollof recently reassured our clients:

“You may have heard about Mitel’s recent announcement regarding their official bankruptcy filing. While this development may raise concerns, please rest assured that our ability to provide exceptional service for your Mitel system will remain uninterrupted.”

While support continuity is a priority in the near term, this event highlights the importance of future-proofing your communications systems—especially as resources shift away from maintaining legacy infrastructure.
